Having acquired the entire Celtos range, we decided that the figures were so good that we had to start collecting our own forces. Although we received some painted figures as part of the deal there were no Sidhe models so I decided that was the army for me. Now bear in mind that although I like to think that I'm a reasonable painter I haven't painted many 28mm figures for a while, so I was going to have to learn some new techniques as I went along. I won't shy away from showing any failures, either - this'll be a warts'n'all effort. I also selected a colour scheme - orginally it was to be gold armour with purple and yellow on the shields and cloth, but it soon became obvious that the yellow was superfluous given the amount of golden armour on display. This will hopefully be a 'living' gallery which I'll update each time I finished and photograph some new figures. The plan is that the models at the bottom of the page will eventually be better than the ones at the top. Let's see, shall we ...

Female Retainer Leader. My first unit is going to be a retainer group so I thought I'd start with a leader. I use a black undercoat, I found a while back that white doesn't suit my painting style unless I'm painting something in bright colours. Anyway, the first thing I learnt is that my flesh painting abilities weren't up to large areas such as this character's legs. I've had to spend a while on this and subsequent models practising and hopefully things will get better. However, not bad for a first attempt I thought so I moved onto ...

Sidhe Retainer. The first of the unit to be completed. Flesh improving, after all he has plenty of skin area to work on, and you can see the purple / gold scheme I'e chosen for the army. One thing I decided after finishing this model is that I'm going to colour-code the discs hanging below each model's belt to identify units, so this chap will have his turquoise ones repainted to match the red ones on the leader. I also repainted all of the bases of the models I'd done so far since I wasn't happy with the dark tone I'd selected - hence the bases on the two figures so far look unfinished (drybrushing and flock needed).

Elf Guard Champion. This guy was a bit of a test. He has large areas of golden armour which I've struggled with. I tried a green wash mix and then layered over the top but in the end it's come out looking a bit too flat - possibly the wash was too dilute and not strong enough, so I might go back and try again. I also have a Drakon Sul model in progress with even more armour to worry about and he's suffering from the same problem.

Well, that's the completed ones so far. In the works I have a unit of Dragon Riders (4) of which I've finished the mounts but the riders aren't quite there yet - more armour paint problems. I'm also working on my Retainer unit, I have one of each Retainer model lined up along with a standard bearer and musician for a unit of twelve figures in total. I need to learn to paint a little quicker too, otherwise my army will never get on the table ...
