Land Ironclads is a companion game to Aeronef, the immensely popular rules for aerial warfare in an alternative late C.19th by Wessex Games. As its name implies, LI deals with combat on the ground in the same period. The kings of the battlefield are huge fighting machines, the Ironclads of the title, which cross the landscape on tracks, wheels or even primitive mechanical legs, dealing destruction wherever they go. Small steam-driven machines, known as contraptions and akin to the tanks of the First World War, scurry between the hulking ironclads creating their own smaller form of mayhem. More conventional infantry, cavalry and artillery units, albeit augmented with all manner of fantastic weaponry, add to the confusion. Giant aeronef, dirigibles and winged aircraft fight their own battles in the sky while raining down bombs on the units below.
Compatibility
The rules are compatible with Aeronef and allow aerial and ground forces to be used in the same game. Further rulesets from Wessex will expand the game across the seas, below the earth and finally into space.
Scale
In anticipation of the rules, at Brigade we have created a plethora of models representing not only the forces of the great powers but also mysterious alien invaders from a world beyond our own. The scale for these models is 1/1200th, the same as our range of Aeronef flying craft. This scale is also near-as-makes-no-odds the same as 2mm.
The Future
Stage 1 of development will be to make all of the current models available individually - we'd like to have done this immediately but matters beyond our control made this impossible. Stage 2 will be to round out the British and German armies with the full range of Ironclads from class-1 down to class-5, plus a few others the rulebook doesn't mention. Stage 3 will include the French army which will allow the Franco-Prussian and 1899 Invasion of Britain. Stage 4 will feature the Russians, again for the 1899 conflict and also Crimea. That's as far as the planning goes now, but anyone with a rulebook will see that there's still plenty of scope for many more models and more nations. If your favourite VSF force hasn't been mentioned (Ottoman Turks, Austro-Hungary, Italy, USA etc), don't worry, we'll get to it in the end. At some stage, hopefully early, we'll release some generic infantry and cavalry units which can be used by any nation. Finally, we'll also be developing at a range of compatible scenery including buildings and fortifications.
Packs (starter and battalion) have bases includes, but individual models are not supplied with bases. Not everyone wants the plastic bases (we think they're great, but we realise some people may want to base their models differently or for other rules systems). Rather than making you pay for bases you don't want, we supply them seperately in our Accessories range.
