Starting my first fleet, some questions :)

Hey everyone, this is my first post and the first thing I would like to do is to introduce myself, Im james and Im from California, USA, living in orange county. Im completely new to aeronefs but not to modeling, scratch building, and table top war games.

I want to start a fleet and so far after browsing the web for quite a while, I think Im set on the French ships. But what is the best way to get into the game? Should I buy a starter that also has the brits in it, or buy a french fleet back which contains larger and in my opinion cooler ships, should I buy the Grand fleet pack, or simply buy individual models?

And Aswell as that Ive looked into "irregular minatures" and have found their aeronefs they also sell, is their any set they make that would look good combined and intertwined with the french fleet?

Thanks in advanced for all the input, Im really looking forward to purchasing some (I just wish I could find a dealer somewhere in California.... owell looks like Ill be buying direct

I can't really vote, my opinion doesn't really count !

I would say that most people start with either a fleet or grand fleet pack, possibly supplemented with a few extra individual models.

A starter pack makes sense if you don't have an opponent lined up - I often advise new players to pick up a starter pack plus a couple of battleships, one per side.

We don't have any US dealers at the moment, but we're reasonably fast at shipping.

Good luck, whichever route you choose - and share your experiences with us here !

Hi,

Tony got me hooked at Salute a year or so ago, in true dealer mode, go on try this......it's a bit of fun..three fleets later and i'm an addict.

In truth there is no simple answer, and here lies the beauty of the genre, it can be whatever you want it to be. You can go for one of the larger fleets and for me the Great White fleet and Dewey holds a fascination, but likewise i've also want to have a go at a Chilian fleet for South America. Small scale squadron actions focusing on cruisers and destroyers rather than Battleships. Gold running, escorts and merchant raiding can all create fascinating games at a fraction of the cost while you set yourself up.

That being said, the French fleet is stunning....

Whatever you choose, it's a lot of fun and look forward to seeing some models on the forum.

All the best

Jon

Thanks for the speedy reply :)

I made up my mind and figured out which route I plan to take.

I literally just made an order for my french fleet. I purchased a French fleet pack as I thought it was the best option to get me started. Also in my order I purchased the rule book, and the German Dig pack for my brother. Unfortunately there wasnt a french vs. germany starter set so we went with this route.

We cant wait to get our order and start up our fleets!

Hello Jim; As other contributors have said - starter packs are great value and it gives a nice mini-fleet to get you started. BEWARE - meglomania is only one step away. I started off with around 8 x Austro-Hungarian ships and the fleet now has 84 vessels and growing. I scratch build ships which were (then) missing from the Order of Battle (e.g. Viribus Unitus and Teggethof classes) - however Brigade are now catching up with new models all the time. It also fosters research into the real world and how to adapt it to VSF -all my ships are named after genuine A-H ships, but given the prefix "LFT" (Luftfahrtruppen) to distinguish the Aeronef from wet navy vessels of the same name. Have a look at the Arbuthnots site for some stunning conversion ideas that as a seasoned modeller you can soon incorporate into your models to give them some real class! Good luck with your chosen project(s). David
