Battlecruisers

Postby fast.git » Mon Aug 27, 2007 10:01 am

I'm curious about the existence and role of battlecruisers in the Aeronef gaming 'verse.

What I know... I understand that battlecruisers were post-Dreadnought warships envisioned as units that could outrun anything they could not outfight (big guns and big speed at the expense of protection), and that those big guns were awfully tempting. I also understand that they're not entirely canon for the pre-dreadnought period. Instead, armoured, protected, and unarmoured cruisers filled operational roles to be later intended for battlecruisers and light cruisers.

So...

Here's the question(s). What are they supposed to do (in Aeronef)? Not fast enough to catch a cruiser, and not powerful enough (in most cases) to out-duel a battleship... they seem to lack a specific role.

The fact that nefs are not exactly ships -- and that they operate differently and have different strengths and limitations -- could certainly play a part. Most nefs are far more maneuverable than their naval analog... and nefs, due to their need to fly, carry only smaller calibre weapons. Which, in turn, may rule out the eventual development of an all-big gun Dreadnought style nef. I don't know.

What are your thoughts?

Yep, it's a fair cop, the Battlecruiser class didn't really exist in the time that Nef is set. For that matter, the Blucher shouldn't really be termed a 'Dreadnought' since the term wasn't in use at that time either.

Battlecruisers are really just lighter capital Nef, so the term Light Battleship (BBL or BL ?) would serve just as well. They are generally slightly faster than normal battleships but not significantly so.

Aeronef 2.

I've seen mention of it in a couple of threads. Any plans to bring ship types in line with canon pre-dreadnought era vessels (armoured & protected cruisers, etc.)? Or is that something of no great import and more for the individual player (should he/she desire the change)?

Also, as the stats for models are somewhat flexible, how does one determine whether a model is intended to be a particular class?

Remember too that BCs (as envisaged by "Jackie" Fisher) were meant to protect the Empire's Sea Lanes of Communication and Trade, not go toe to toe with BBs. A convy with BC protection in its escort wouldnt therfore be threatened by raider cruisers.

Aeronef 2 is still in the pipeline although a bout of illness amongst the Wessex Games scribes (ie Steve B has been a bit under the weather) has meant a delay.

If you want some alternative rules in the interim, at least one cunning gamer over at the Majestic 12 forums has been playing games using the Iron Stars rules and Nef models.

I played a game of IS this weekend (Brits vs Austrians) and it's a lot of fun.

Tony - I know the 2 systems are very different, but what are your feelings regarding playability and the fielding of larger squadrons and fleets vs getting bogged down with only a few vessels each ?

EDIT - Curse you for quoting me before I could fix my typos Zophiel!
