Company packs questions

Postby javelin98 » Mon Nov 03, 2008 8:34 pm

First off, the new company packs look great! A couple of questions right off the bat:

The "Chang Zheng Rocket Launchers" -- are those the Mao Zhedong based models?

How many infantry figures are included in the infantry packs?

I'm sure other questions will come up, but I for one welcome our new 6mm overlords!

24; 2 officers, 2 missile launchers, 2 heavy machine guns, 2 flame-throwers (melta guns?) and 16 men.

And... LOVELY!

But...!
Aren't Iron Cow's squads just half a squad? Ie like four men?
So how many are there actually within the "Infantry Figures"?

Oh, you're right... most of the Infantry Companies have 6 APCs or MICVs, and 24/6=4, so one 4-man stand per vehicle. Makes perfect sense.

Except for the CDSU, which have 8 APC's, giving you 8 three-man stands. But maybe that's because the CDSU grunts are such killing machines!

Just noticed the company packs and love the idea. Like javelin98, I would like to see support units for the various forces, although I am not sure that the make-up of the suggested packs is exactly what I would go for since I am playing FutureWarsCommander rather than Iron Cow. Still, my Germans could definitely do with a support company including SPAT units, SPGs and anti-aircraft assets. The proposed German Light Fire Support company and the AT Support company work for me. I think I would put Wotan tanks into the Heavy Fire Support company because there are already enough forces that include Thor MBTs. Another company that could come in handy would be a Recce company with a selection of armoured cars and dismounted / mech elements.

Cheers,
Ruarigh

I think these company packs are brilliant.
You can add a decent bunch to the force at hand.

As for FWC... It's a good system. The army lists are there, but I'm not so sure on their functionality in reality. People ( I use the term loosly and include such as tyranids etc) tend to have more structure in their army composition.
A structure based on economic and tactical reasons.

Well, javelin98 managed to pretty much cover every major idea I had when I first saw the company packs, so I'll leave them alone. Well, maybe second and third them.

I will say that this is the perfect chance to introduce some of the more esoteric "non-best" selling models you guys have, and maybe making things like "headquarters" packs with a sampling of softskins for a little realism/flavor.

But mostly I'd just like to say that the idea is great, and a nice, unexpected treat. Excellent job, Brigade!

With the arrival of the Russians, here are some possible company packs for our Red friends. These packs assume a £1 price point for the Laska HQ vehicle, Mech Assault Gun, Shtorm SPH, and Shtorm variants; pack sizes might be increased if the Laska HQ vehicles are priced at 75p or if a Kunitsa-based HQ vehicle is released at 75p. Some of the packs below include a conjectured Kunitsa-based HQ vehicle.

Russian Armored Combat Team (base cost = £26, -10% = ~£23 -- priced in line with other factions' army packs, for 29 vehicles)
HQ Group (1 Bizon MBT + 4 Laska HQ Vehicles)
1 Tank Platoon (8 Bizon MBT + 1 Laska HQ Vehicle)
1 Mech Infantry Platoon (6 Kunitsa APCs + 1 Kunitsa-based HQ Vehicle)
1 Artillery Platoon (3 Shtorm SPHs + 1 Laska HQ Vehicle)
1x Scout Section (4 Laska Tankettes + 1 Kunitsa-based HQ vehicle)

Russian Motor Rifle Combat Team (base cost = £26.25, -10% = ~£23 for 28 vehicles and 48 infantry)
HQ Group (1 Bizon MBT + 3 Laska HQ Vehicles)
2 Mech Infantry Platoons (each with 6 Kunitsa APCs + 1 Kunitsa-based HQ Vehicle)
2x Infantry Packs
1x Anti-Tank Section (4 Osa Tracked Missile Carrier + 1 Laska HQ Vehicle)
1x Scout Section (4 Laska Tankettes + 1 Kunitsa-based HQ vehicle)

Russian Tank Company (Base cost = £9, -10% = ~£8)
8x Bizon MBT
1x Laska Command Vehicle

Russian Motor Rifle Company (Base cost = £8.75, -10% = ~£8)
6x Kunitsa APC
2x Rosomakhi Light Tank
1x Kunitsa-based HQ Vehicle
Infantry Pack

Russian Armored Shock Company (Base cost = £10, -10% = ~£9)
6x Mech Assault Gun
4x Rosomakhi Light Tank
1x Laska Command Vehicle

Russian Cossack Shock Company (Base cost = £10.50, -10% = ~£9.50)
3x Mech Assault Gun
6x Kunitsa APC
1x Laska Command Vehicle
Infantry Pack

Russian Cavalry Scout Troop (Base cost = £7.25, -10% = ~£6.50)
6x Laska Tankette (Gun)
4x Laska Tankette (Missile)
2x Rosomakhi Light Tank
1x Kunitsa-based HQ Vehicle

Russian Antitank Missile Company (Base cost = £7, -10% = ~£6.25)
6x Osa Tracked Missile Carrier
1x Laska Command Vehicle

Russian Heavy Dragoon Company (Base cost = £10.50, -10% = ~£9.50)
6x Vombat Hybrid Tank/APC
1x Laska Command Vehicle
Infantry Pack

Russian Katyusha Company (Base cost = £9, -10% = ~£8)
4x Vikhr Tracked Rocket Launcher
4x Shtorm SPH
1x Laska Command Vehicle

Russian Cossack Rifles Company (Base cost = £8.50, -10% = ~£7.75)
2x Infantry Packs
3x Laska Tankette (Gun)
3x Laska Tankette (Missile)
2x Kunitsa-based HQ Vehicle

Russian Cossack Mortars Company (Base cost = £7.75, -10% = ~£7.00)
1x Infantry Pack
2x Mortar Packs
2x Laska Tankette (Gun)
6x Polevka Tracked Light Truck
1x Kunitsa-based HQ Vehicle

Russian Hussars Cavalry Troop (Base cost = £9.50, -10% = ~£8.50)
8x Rosomakhi Light Tank
4x Laska Tankette (Missile)
2x Kunitsa-based HQ Vehicle

Russian Peasant Rifles Company (Base cost = £9.75, -10% = ~£8.75)
3x Infantry Packs
6x Polevka Tracked Light Truck
1x Kunitsa-based HQ vehicle

(Because it just wouldn't be Russia without some mention of peasants...)

Those are well-thought out company teams, Javelin98. Vurry nice.

However, personally, I would reduce some of the "free" HQ vehicles; even in the future, the Russians should be known for their plodding tactics and rigid acherence to "the plan" (and yes, I know that the Soviet/Rusian military understood the concepts behind freedom of action, but stereotypes are so enjoyable in this instance, da?).

I would like to add this one, though:

Russian Aerial Desant Company
2x Infantry Pack
1x Mortar Pack
2x Laska Tankette (Gun)
2x Laska Tankette (Missile)
8x Polevka Tracked Light Truck
2x Laska Command Vehicle

Which would of course engender the need for at least a Russian transport VTOL, if not an assault helo as well. Which would be a shame, wouldn't it?

EDIT--Brigade's idea for kitted-up Bizons made me feel pretty giddy, actually. Surely the APCs will get the same treatment, won't they? I mean, they deserve it even more than the [smaller crewed] tanks...

I'd love to see a pair of Russian VTOL's! For inspiration, I'd point to the VTOL's in the game Battlefield 2142; the PAC transport especially has a nice blocky Russian feel to it.

And of course, we could still use some combat engineer vehicles... *sigh*

Nice inclusion of the VTOLs!

I agree, the Gamelin/Catroux could use some more variants. Here's a good reference:

Image

A. Infantry Carrier Vehicle
B. Command Vehicle
C. Mobile Gun System
D. Fire Support Vehicle
E. Medical Evacuation Vehicle
F. Mortar Carrier
G. Engineer Support Vehicle
H. Anti-Tank Guided Missile Vehicle
I. Nuclear, Biological, Chemical, Reconnaissance Vehicle
J. Reconnaissance Vehicle

Figure that the IFV, medevac, FST-V, and recon vehicles could all be one model in the Catroux line. The command and ATGM are already provided for, and the Gamelin fills the mobile gun system role. All that's left is a mortar carrier and engineer vehicle. (*cough*)

Another possible idea would be an urban warfare variant of the Gamelin, like the M1A2 TUSK (Tank Urban Survival Kit), the Leopard 2 PSO, or the Russian BMP-T. Maybe even a "gun truck" version of the Catroux, which swaps out the turret for several small, remotely-operated turrets with machine guns or AGLs mounted in them, for Ambush Alley-type operations.

I do have to say, I like experimenting with MTOE's that have mixed vehicle types within the same maneuver unit. I like how you threw the Javelots and Cartoux in together in the mech infantry platoons.
