I've gone for a quite bright mid-blue colour:

Games Workshop Enchanted Blue is the exact shade. I took my inspiration from Dr Evil's fleet:

Another option is to polish up the bare metal as best you can, then give it a good wash with Magic Dip (or your wash of choice) and pick out highlights and details (windows, lights, emblems). That gives you a nice no-frills steel military look. I had a fleet from GZG done up that way but I sold it off last year. I'll see if I can find some pics of it.

Polishing the metal is best done with a suede shoe cleaning brush. Used to do it for chainmail.
