Squadron Commander at Salute

Hopefully you’ve all seen the posts about the imminent re-release of Squadron Commander. We’ve had the project on the backburner for some time now and we felt it was finally time we had a big push and got it out into the big, bad world.

We’ve learnt how much is involved in developing a set of rules, especially when the same people are making the masters, producing the moulds and casting the production models ! We have to thank our gallant band of playtesters at Maidstone Wargames Society for helping in development, having several extra sets of eyes read the document and play the game has been immensely useful.

After much discussion we’ve opted for a free PDF download for the initial release. The ‘Lite’ version that we’d initially mooted has evolved into an edition that has the complete game rules and stats for our initial release batch of eight models. The extra bits that turn it from a stand-alone set of rules into a full game, such as scenarios, background information, colour schemes and painting guides etc, will follow on later. Probably the most crucial item that won’t be included initially is the design and points system – it hasn’t been possible to produce a decent points system while the rules themselves were still evolving – so that will be one of the first additional updates. Our aim is to release a new version of the rules on a (very roughly) monthly basis, incorporating corrections and clarifications as well as new material. With a bit of luck the time taken to produce the extra material will allow us to incorporate feedback from everyone and nail down a pretty solid final set of rules.

There will be a print edition eventually, once the rules are complete – we’re looking at print-on-demand services (eg Lulu) for this.

The first batch of starter packs sold at Salute and via the website will have a CD with the rules PDF on. The same PDF will be available to download for free from the Squadron Commander page, as will any updates. The starter packs will have 16 models plus bases and dice for £30. We’ll also have blisters of four fighters with bases at a discount on the individual models.
We already have a further five models completed and will release those, along with a number of other new ones, over the rest of the year.

Further ideas we’re toying with include a supplement dealing with small capital ships and even the possibility of scaling up some of our smaller spaceships and producing them in resin – time will tell if that’s a realistic possibility.

Right, better go off and finish writing the last bits of the rulebook ...

I'm all excited! I love the idea that my ONESS Germans can have low orbit support and that we can take to space in our fighters to fight it out over the Bwendi system. Wahey! Now to beg my wife for some pennies to spend on these beauties!! :)
