The first project we attempted when experimented with computer design and 3D printing was one of our favourite (and most popular) spaceships, the Pommerania<\/a> dreadnought. The beautifully detailed 3D model came back from the printers before Xmas, and after thorough cleaning in an ultrasonic bath Phil popped it into a mould. As the two halves shut in the vulcaniser, he reported hearing a loud crack, which isn’t normal !<\/p>\n

We feared the worst, and when the mould opened our fears were confirmed:<\/p>\n

The hull had split completely under the pressure of the closing mould, leaving us completely deflated – we’d been looking forward to getting the Pom back into production.<\/p>\n

It wasn’t the only casualty – a prototype British destroyer also met a sticky end, snapping clean in two:<\/p>\n

It’s not exactly back to square one – we’re going to experiment with beefing up the hulls slightly and using a different, stronger material. This material doesn’t take quite as much detail but we’re hopeful it will still look good.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
