Communications to and from Wing Craft - a discussion

Postby david frampton » Tue May 28, 2013 12:21 am

Hello Chaps;

Please feel free to offer your comments and thoughts. A few points for consideration -

In real history, the first air to ground radio message was transmitted in 1911 using a "manpack" radio. The first air to air radio set was fitted in 1915, although hand signals were in use from the first inception of aircraft.

Aircraft ("Wing Craft") are used for reconnaissance - rules are already written for this, but the vessel must land before it reveals the intelligence gathered.

Historically, aircraft were also used to assist in spotting for the fall of shot for battleships. If this was considered as a game mechanism - how do they communicate in the 1800s without radio?

Heliograph - range? Cloudy day?

Semaphore? (I can imagine making a model 'nef sprouting signal arms.... mmmm)

Begbie signalling - a (kerosene) oil lamp, was first put in to practice by Captain, later Vice Admiral, Philip Colomb in 1867. His original code, was used for seven years, until replaced by Morse.

Lime Light?

Aldis lamp "flickers" are realistically too big for fighter sized wingcraft as they have a 20 inch diameter and a super-hot carbon-arc lamp. Would a bomber sized vehicle be better or practical? Who and how would it operate?

Flashing Electric Lamps ?

Google: "Victorian Era Visual Signalling Instruments -Black Watch, 42nd Royal Highland Regiment Signalling Unit, c. 1898"

Do we need such wingcraft assistance? Do we need to change the gunnery rules as they already hit on a 6 - perhaps using the "fall of shot" message allowing hits on a 5/6 at long range and hits on 4/5/6 at short range?

Will this skew the existing rules too much or make for a quicker game?

Please let me have your thoughts

David

Very interesting topic guys

I cannot stop thinking at that old cartoon in which the vultutre squadron were hunting the pigeon messanger, I mean that was the real deal a pigeon with message to and from ships and why no a couple also on board of a reconaisance plane. . . . .

There was a hunt-the-pigeon participation game at Salute 2014:

The pigeon was represented by a round cardboard counter (top right in photo).

I believe pigeons were tried from aircraft but I can not remember the source or how successful they were.
