The trend of random-character-named spammers for porn and pharma-products is continuing. I've recruited on new member to help (via suggestions at the present time). His name here is Fergi_the_Great.

Here's what I intend to do with this thread: Each time a potential new spammer joins our community here, I'll be posting their name and why I think they qualify as spammer (before they post if I'm fast enough).

Please let me know if this is inappropriate for me to take on myself or if it is seen to be unfair to new arrivals.

The first suspected, future offender is pxgjbvgbpmo (joined today). The name is a random string and the website is a link to pharma-products.

nbkuaqjzems (joined two days ago). The link in their profile is to a porn site.

There are several simple things to prevent this, at least from other boards that I manage, and from some websites I administrate/have administrated.

Require validation
Ban certain IPS or registration names
Change the format of information in your skin and style sheet so that they can't automatically generate an account

If I knew more about your forum, I could give you more specifics. I have asked Captain John Asendorf (USArmy) who runs a website on a similar game to give me access to his admin CP which is like yours so I can see the formatting in case you prefer not to do so in my case.

All in all, I do own the IP assignment list from the FCC (for advertising purposes), so I know how to track down some of the cheaters, and there are some simple code rules you can imput in your ADMINCP assuming you have it set up to filter out potential offenders.

There should also be some way to filter out certain types of replies, words, html, etc., so as to eliminate harmful spam such as porn. All in all, the FCC knows you are not responsible for it, so no worries except as it annoys your members.

I'm more than happy to try and explain this. Contact me via IM for more details or we can telephone, on my dime.

Though ceo4less's profile contains no website, the information they've provided is clearly intended as an advertisement of a service.

I know a lot of the user names on this forum from other places, but by no means all so I thought I'd check out the member list, see what members have been posting (if anything), and see what it threw up...

These users are definitely as bent as a nine bob note

I can vouch for jimbeau, themattcurtis, and Oerjan (not that they need me to)...*L* they're active on other forums I know of. :)
I admit it! I'm a greedy ship-a-holic...next fleet please!

validation registration is a good idea...

as to who among the suspects might/not be spam, this is easily accomplished with access to their registration information

If you really have hackers, they can be dealt with, but they are for later because I have to find out how they're doing it first.
I live to serve.

Perhaps one of the moderators could visit here:

…and contact a member of the Support Team, of which Micheal Cottingham (or Techie-Micheal) is the Team Leader. Maybe there's a simple solution the "help desk" can provide. Clearly, someone is abusing their service as well as our community.

We all agree to their Terms of Service before registration can be completed. Even the spammer's (probably automated) efforts have to go through that step to get here.

And, since I am mindful that the leaders of the Brigade have lives and full-time jobs, perhaps it is time to propose that a representative be designated. I nominate Go0gleplex and/or Ben Brownlie, as both seem to have a bit more knowledge on the subject (and the community of this forum) than I.
