Starting things off...

To begin, let's start with our first awareness of VSF and (if possible) why we think it appeals.

For me, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was the first VSF novel I recall reading. I remain a fan of both the book and the Disney movie. There may never be an improvement on their design of the Nautilus.

In answering the second part of the question we may all only be guessing. VSF captured my attention because it was so innovative compared to what I was reading at the time and painted a very different picture of a future than its non-Victorian children. Futurism has gone silent lately (perhaps because we don't need to wait quite so long for any predictions to be proven false or eeriely accurate).

It may also be true that VSF contained more subtle satire. And that appeals to me still.
