DBA Tournament, 2010

With the recent loss of long-time chairman and MWS member, Trev Pearless, it was decided to change the name of the MWS DBA Tournament in honour of our dearly missed friend, and so from now on the annual DBA tournament will be renamed to keep his memory alive.

This year's game was in 6mm and themed around 'Alexander, his successors, allies and enemies'.

Players and armies were as follows:

  • Alan Ockleford- Classical Indian
  • Alex Martin - Seleucid
  • Paul Lymath - Alexandrians
  • John Lambert - Late Achaemenid Persian
  • Andy King - Galatian
  • Tony Gibbs - Thracian
  • Colin Campbell - Seleucid
  • Mike Proudlock- Graeco Bactrian
  • Ian Proudlock - Early Rhoxalani Sarmatian
  • Mark Woodger - Late Achaemenid Persian
  • Pete Woodger - Gallic

This year would prove to be a very close-run thing, especially among the top players.

The opening round saw Alex get off to an early lead and Alexander the Great (via Paul) pair off against Darius (John). Only this time Darius won!

The second round saw one of the quickest victories of the day - Mike trounced Andy in less than a minute or two. But a quick victory is not always the best; sometimes it pays to draw the punishment out a little to destroy more of your opponent's elements and get more points. This would come back to haunt Mike, who won all except one of his games, but won them a bit too quickly and missed out on the odd point or so.

Alan's winning streak looked just about used up. He's won the tournament more than anyone else, but something was missing this year. It was starting to look less and less likely that the family heirloom would be making its way back to the Ockleford mantelpiece. Top spot was between Mike, John, Colin, Alex and Paul, who were all winning at one point or another.

In the last two rounds John had two impressive victories, scoring seven points in each game. This pushed him toward the top of the table, making him a favourite to take the trophy. But behind it all had been Colin, whose inauspicious start belied the fact that for the rest of the day he won all his games. It was this consistency that carried the day.

Final results and places were as follows:

  1. Colin Campbell (27pts)
  2. John Lambert (26pts)
  3. Mike Proudloack (25pts)
  4. Paul Lymath (24pts)
  5. Alex Martin (22pts)
  6. Alan Ockleford (16pts)
  7. Andy King (13pts)
  8. Tony Gibbs (13pts)
  9. Ian Proudlock (9pts)
  10. Mark Woodger (8pts)
  11. Pete Woodger (1pt)
