Um... what year is it?

Postby javelin98 » Mon Jul 08, 2013 5:38 pm

I just realized that I don't know what year Aeronef is set in! I figured somewhere between 1880 and 1900? Anyone?

1884 Negative Gravity Screw invented – introduction of first aeronef. Introduction of fixed wing aircraft

1889 Scientific advancements in United Kingdom confirm that R-Matter manufacture is achievable from elements found on earth. Professor Hartley Rennick and the Earl of Redgrave chair the first international R-Matter symposium hosted by Sir Christopher Turnor Bt at Stoke Rochford Hall in Lincolnshire, England. These joint alumni of Newton College invite plenipotentiary representatives from Europe, Asia, Russia and Americas to discuss the use of R-Matter Gravitons for the benefit of mankind. Discussions break down as no agreements can be reached between the assembled nations who all seek to use R-Matter to enhance their own empires.

Some players move the date of introduction back a bit so that the American Civil war can be fought incorporating Aeronef.

Good stuff Chaps - I know that a "new" time line is being considered to incorporate early nef during ACW period and also bring forward the use of wing craft. I await the publication.

It's all good. I'm just designing up another digital 'nef fleet (Spanish Armada, anyone?) and realized that it was looking very WW2-ish, versus the pre-dreadnought aesthetic that seems to be more in line with the setting.

Thanks again!

If you are doing Spanish - check out the real Navy lists for the Victorian period. Many vessels were provided by Britain. I also (somewhere) have a spanish fleet Order of battle for Aeronef, if interested please let me know.

At Last!!! - a contact with Fen Edge Gaming. I was trying to get hold of your club to invite you all to an Aeronef convention in February next year (and possibly October this year) at Stoke Rochford, near Grantham. Free to participate. Accommodation available etc. at the hotel at very favourable rates - however, as you are only a couple of hours away, you may wish to commute. If you do stay, I can promise an excellent dinner, bed and breakfast at a Grade One listed Victorian mansion. Please see the forum for the outline details of the big game "Piracy in the Caribbean"

Please e-mail me at d.frampton@stokerochfordhall.co.uk for details.

1852 First Airship introduced

1854 First primitive “War Tractors” introduced by Great Britain – known as “Contraptions”, then as they grew bigger, “Land Ironclads”.

1859 Piedmontese War/Italian war of Independence. Allied with Neopolitans. Early use of LI tractors. Austro-Hungary invade Sardinia and Piedmont. Following French intervention, Austro-Hungarians lose the battle of Solferino. Experimental oil well drilling at Titusville, Pennsylvania by "Colonel" Edwin Drake strikes oil at a depth of 69.5 feet. Prior to that, oil, which had been used mostly as a lubricant and lamp fuel, had been obtained only at places where it seeped from the ground.

1860 War with Italy continues. Battle of Custoza (win) and Bezzeccca (loss).
The first European prototypes of a self-propelled torpedo were created by Giovanni Luppis, an Austrian naval officer from Fiume (today Rijeka, Croatia). His design was the “Salvacoste” (coastsaver), a floating weapon, driven by ropes from the land. The project was not taken up by the Navy.

1863 James Plimpton of Medford, Massachusetts, invents the first practical four-wheeled roller skate.
Ecuadorian–Colombian War. Following the Treaty of Pinsaqui, both sides agreed to a return to the pre-war status quo.

1864 The Second Schleswig War breaks out when Prussian forces supported by Austria cross Schleswig border to solve the “Schleswig Question”. Like the First Schleswig War (1848–51), it was fought because of succession disputes concerning the duchies of Holstein and Lauenburg when the Danish king died without an heir acceptable to the German Confederation. The war ended when Denmark surrenders control over Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg to Prussia and Austria Paraguayan War between the Alliance of Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay against Paraguay. The Alliance forces made much use of balloon reconnaissance over the next six years. Austria exports war materiel to Bolivia & Chile. Giovanni Luppis contracts Robert Whitehead, an English engineer and manager of a Fiume factory to help him perfect the Salvacoste. The result was a submarine weapon, renamed the Minenschiff, the first real self-propelled torpedo.

1865 Austria exports war materiel to Paraguay, notably land Ironclads.

1866 “7 Weeks War” with Prussia ends in humiliating defeat. Aggressive use of land Iron clads completely out-wit Austro-Hungarian commanders. Selling off military hardware to South American countries is blamed for lack of available battlefield equipment.
Giovanni Luppis, presents the Minenschiff, the first self-propelled torpedo, the Imperial Naval commission on December 21.
In Sweden Alfred Nobel invents dynamite, a safe and manageable form of nitro-glycerine. Nobel hopes that the destructive power of his invention would bring an end to wars.

1867 Ausgleich or “compromise” finally concluded on 8th February, which is the agreement formalising relations between Austria and Hungary by establishing the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary. The kingdom of Hungary had desired equal status with the Austrian Empire, which was weakened by its defeat in the “7 Weeks War”. The Austrian emperor Francis Joseph gives Hungary full internal autonomy together with a responsible ministry, and in return Hungary agreed that the empire should still be a single great state for purposes of war and foreign affairs, thus maintaining its dynastic prestige abroad.
Austria excluded from the “German League”. Austro-Hungarian army carried out further reforms.
The first barbed wire is patented by Lucien B. Smith of Ohio.
The Russians formally transfer Alaska to the United States following its sale for $7.2 million in gold.

1868 Robert Whitehead demonstrates two new torpedo models before representatives of the Austrian Navy; a 14” & a 16”type. The weapons carried wet gun-cotton warheads and achieved speeds of about seven knots to about 700 yards. The Austrian Naval Officers attending the trials were impressed sufficiently to order weapons to be produced but were unable to buy the patent rights outright.

1869 Torpedo boat flotillas are introduced to the Austro-Hungarian navy.
The Suez Canal is opened in Egypt, linking the Mediterranean and the Red seas. The 100 mile canal eliminates a 4000-mile trip around Africa.

1870 Austro-Hungarian contingent supports Prussia against France. France declares war on Prussia and German States.

1871 Germany created by the unification of 25 German states. War ends between France & Germany.

1872 Britain pays the United States £3 million compensation for losses resulting from building the Confederate commerce-raider Alabama which played havoc with Federal shipping. Despite Britain’s official neutrality during the American Civil War, it allowed the ship to sail from the slipway at Birkenhead.

1873 Germany forms “League of the Three Emperors” with Russia and Austria-Hungary to prevent them from forming any future alliance with France. Austro-Hungarian and Russian ambitions clash in the Balkans.

1875 Bulgaria and Serbia become quasi-protectorates of Russia following its support in liberating Balkan Christians from Ottoman rule.

1876 Balkan crisis escalates with rebellion in Bosnia and Herzegovina, against the Ottoman Turks. The insurrection is suppressed with such great cruelty that Serbia, but none of the West European powers, declared war.

1877-8 Serbia declares war on the Ottoman Empire in 1877. Russia assists Serbia in the Russo-Turkish War and within one year, with Russia threatening Constantinople, the Ottomans surrender. Russia forces the Ottomans to sign the Treaty of San Stefano in March 1878, creating an enlarged, independent Bulgaria that stretched into the southwestern Balkans. Britain threatens to declare war over the terms of the Treaty of San Stefano and an exhausted Russia backs down. At the Congress of Berlin in July 1878, Russia agrees to the creation of a smaller Bulgaria. Russian nationalists are furious with Austria-Hungary and Germany for failing to back them but accept a revived and strengthened League of the Three Emperors as well as Austro-Hungarian hegemony in the western Balkans.

1879 The Dual Alliance Treaty is signed between Germany and Austria-Hungary. This defensive alliance pledges to aid one another in case of an attack by Russia

1881 Russia sponsors Bulgarian independence.

1882 Triple Alliance between Austro-Hungarian Empire, Germany and Italy.
Introduction of Class 1 Terranef .

1883 Austro-Hungarian army reforms – 2 regiments of Uhlans disbanded to pay for increase Aeronef/Land Ironclad development

1884 Negative Gravity Screw invented – introduction of first aeronef. Introduction of fixed wing aircraft

1885 Gottlieb Daimler perfects Combustion engine. Bulgaria unifies with the Ottoman autonomous province of Eastern Rumelia.

1886 Construction work starts on the first Negative Gravity Screw aerostats to be introduced into Austro-Hungarian fleet, Herkules and Orion. Universe is separated into positive & negative elements.

1887 Herkules crashes on maiden voyage with all hands lost. Decision made to wait for results of further experiments with R-Matter before additional development of existing platforms. Second generation, Class 2 Terranef brought into production. The situation in Bulgaria deteriorates owing to Russian interference in domestic affairs. The Bulgarians seek support of Austro-Hungary. In the dispute that arose from this, Germany creates a bilateral defensive alliance, the Reinsurance Treaty of 1887 between Germany and Russia. Following Russo-German acrimony, further loans to Russia are cancelled. France now becomes Russia's financier.

1889 Austro-Hungarian exports war materiel to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Scientific advancements in United Kingdom confirm that R-Matter manufacture is achievable from elements found on earth. Class 3 Terranef introduced.

1890 Austro-Hungarian contingent gives limited support to Germany against UK using flying boat detachments. R-Matter gravitons discovered in meteorites found in the Szeged region of the Transylvanian & Banat mountains. The Russo-Prussian entente collapses following political reform in Germany.

1892 Formation of the Austrian Balloon Corps, the Kaiserlich und Königliche Militäraeronautische Anstalt.

1893 Russia and France for a joint military convention, which matches the dual alliance formed in 1879 by Germany and Austria-Hungary. Class 4 Terranef introduced.

1894 Franco-Russian Alliance of 1892 is ratified after two years negotiation.

1895 Class 5 Terranef introduced.

1896 Ground testing of the first rigid airship, an all-aluminium craft designed by the Austro-Hungarian engineer David Schwarz and built by Carl Berg, begins in Berlin. Schwarz dies of a heart attack before seeing it fly.

1897 On 3rd November the first flight in of Schwarz’s rigid airship is made by Ernst Jägels. It reaches an altitude of 80 feet (24 m), proving metal-framed airships can become airborne, but cannot be controlled in flight and is damaged beyond repair in an emergency landing. Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin buys the wreck and its plans from Schwarz's widow Melanie.

1898 The United States declare war on Spain following the sinking of the Battleship Maine in Havana harbour on February 15, 1898. The war ends with the signing of the Treaty of Paris on December 10, 1898. As a result Spain loses control over Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines Islands, Guam, and other islands.

1899 Secret Vienna conference between the Governments of Austro-Hungary and Germany debate combining Austro-Hungarian and German Astronef development. Crucial decision made not to pursue independent Austro-Hungarian “space adventures” but to co-operate in design sharing and production with Germany.
1900 In conjunction with German and British forces, the Austro-Hungarian Empire declares war on and invades Russia.

1910 Austro-Hungarian contingent supports German in invasion of Denmark, Holland and United Kingdom. Austro-Hungarian forces land at Hull.
