Broadside, and Reasons to Be There

Our next show is our local one, Broadside in Gillingham, Kent on Saturday June 14th.

We’ll have as much stock as we can, but we should sound a note of caution; our show stocks, especially Imperial Skies and spaceship fleet packs, were severely depleted at Salute. For a variety of reasons we might not be able to completely restock before Broadside, so if there’s something that you specifically wanted to pick up then it might be an idea to order it in advance. You can do this via the website using the Pickup at Show shipping option so that you don’t pay any postage. You can choose to pay for it in advance, or on the day using the Cash on Collection payment option.

We will have stocks of our new releases, particularly the 28mm Space Station scenery sets, which should have even more options by the time that the show arrives.

If you wanted reasons to come to the show (beyond the fact that we are there, which should really be enough on its own !), we can give you several. Firstly, The Werelords will be putting on a Hammer’s Slammers game again, although this year it will be in 6mm. Tony has been putting in overtime making a load of new scenery for the day, so you can come along, have a look and meet John Treadaway, author of the rules. Secondly, our club Maidstone Wargames Society will be there with their Battlezone game, which is an homage to the classic 1980s video game. This is a participation game so you can join in and blast some tanks back into their constituent pixels !

And apparently some chap called Dan Abnett will be there – we’re told he’s written a book or two…

Orange America

During the period that Imperial Skies covers (late C.19th/early C.20th), three foreign powers had colonies in South America. We covered the British and French colonial fleets stationed in the Guianas, and today we complete the set with a small Dutch flotilla based in Dutch Suriname.

The largest vessel is the Van Ghent class light battleship, which is preferred to the smaller De Ruyter cruisers because of its longer range and endurance, although several of the latter are also based in the main Dutch base in Paramaribo. Also found on colonial policing duty in the Suriname flotilla are Crijnssen class destroyers and Onversaagd class frigates, both older types.

Suriname is rich in a number of natural resources, so there is a steady stream of merchant traffic transporting all manner of goods. In particular, Suriname has significant amounts of bauxite, a type of aluminium ore, which is shipped back to Europe and used in the production of lightweight airship frames. As part of this release we also have a pair of small Dutch merchants – the Zaandam freighter and Batavia Bauxite Carrier.

Our Imperial Skies South America project is finally nearing its conclusion – after today’s release we have just one more country left to complete the set, and we promise you’ll be seeing the Venezuelans very shortly.

VANF-1012 – Dutch Suriname Flotilla – £14.00
VANF-5010 – Dutch Bauxite Convoy – £14.00
VAN-1006 – van Ghent class Light Battleship – £7.50
VAN-1007 – Crijnssen class Destroyer – £2.00
VAN-1008 – Onversaagd class Frigate – £1.50
VAN-5021 – Zaandam class Merchant – £2.00
VAN-5022 – Batavia class Bauxite Carrier – £1.50

Research Laboratory

After a break over the weekend, the next room we’re visiting in the space station is the Research lab – who knows what goes on in here !

There’s a cleverly designed HiberPod with occupant – the pod opens and closes and can stand upright or lie flat. The occupant comes out so the pod can also be left empty.

There are a number of lab benches with assorted clutter on them including microscopes, test tubes, someone’s note book and coffee cup – and what on earth has escaped from the last of the sample containers … ?

There are analysis devices for testing, err, stuff, and a sample cart.

And there’s the T-Pod and its controller console. No, we don’t know what the ‘T’ stands for either…

SF28-710 – Research Laboratory – £35.00
SF28-711 – HiberPod – £8.00
SF28-712 – Lab Analysis Device 1 – £3.50
SF28-713 – Lab Analysis Device 2 – £3.50
SF28-714 – Lab Benches – £12.50
SF28-715 – Lab Stools – £2.00
SF28-716 – Sample Cart – £2.50
SF28-717 – T-Pod – £9.50
SF28-718 – T-Pod Controller – £3.50

Command Centre

Today the 28mm range moves onto the first of our interior scenery sets. We’re collecting these under the banner of The Space Station since that’s what they depict – the various parts of a large space station (it can be one of our range of stations in our spaceship range if you like, or something else altogether). Of course they don’t have to be used just for space stations – they can be the inside of a spaceship, a research station on a distant moon or just rooms in an ordinary building on the surface of a mundane planet.

We’re starting with the Command Centre. This has a variety of command consoles, computer servers, room dividers and a nifty holo-table for directing operations. In the tradition of 1980s classic sci-fi, most of the command screens are old fashioned CRT monitors and the servers have tape drives !

SF28-700 – Command Centre – £35.00
SF28-701 – Holo-table – £5.00
SF28-702 – Command Console and Chair – £7.00
SF28-703 – Corner Console – £6.00
SF28-704 – Console Desk – £5.00
SF28-705 – Server – £3.00
SF28-706 – Room Dividers – £15.00

“You need that shiftin’ ?”

If you need something shifting, then the 25th century equivalent of a forklift is the power loader. This is a large exo-skeleton with hydraulic claws at the end of two arms, and the ability to lift very large weights*. Designed by the Guiyang Huánglóng Hydraulics Development Co., this type can be found in docks, ports, spaces stations and on board larger ships in the cargo hold.

Ably sculpted by David Sheff, this is a multipart model which is 3D printed in grey resin, and has just arrived on the website in the growing 28mm SF range. It comes complete with a separate power-supply/APU which connects to the back for charging.

SF28-104 – PL-899 Yeren Power Loader – £20.00

*Apparently they’re also good for knocking alien queens out of airlocks, or so we’re told.

Let’s Explore!

Today’s offering is the largest model in our new 28mm range – in fact probably the largest in any of our ranges.

SL-52 Worldranger

It’s the Altair SL-52 Worldranger, an eight-wheeled, all-terrain explorer vehicle. Its fully sealed cabin makes it ideal for hostile environments with non-breathable atmospheres and the life support module allows up to fourteen days operations with four crew.

The rear cargo deck has a capacity of up to 1250kg, and can be used to carry additional fuel, water and oxygen to further extend the vehicle’s range.

The model measures a whopping 160x110mm by 80mm high on its eight wheels and is 3D printed in grey resin.

SF28-103 – SL-52 Worldranger – £48.00

One-man Wagons

28mm week continues with two small utility vehicles. The Qaadi is a 4×4 dune buggy with a single front driver’s seat and rear load bed. The driver is protected by a substantial roll cage in case of accidents.

The Raeside is also a single-seater, but is grav powered instead. Its near-silent propulsion makes it a favourite of hunters, and the rear cargo bed has plenty of room for game.

Raeside

Both models are 3D-printed in grey resin – the Qaadi has seven parts, the Raeside just two.

SF28-101 – Qaadi Dune Buggy – £15.00
SF28-102 – Raeside Grav Sled – £15.00

New Beginnings

Tony’s back from his holiday, so you’ll be glad to know that he’ll be starting on the order backlog that built up while he was away. There’s a fair amount which might take a week or two to clear it, so please bear with us if you have an order in the queue.

It also allows leads us to the final batch of Salute releases – the new 28mm sci-fi range. We’ll be pushing this out over the week so prepare for a glut of posts on the blog. The range is an eclectic mix of items ranging through small stowage items, furniture and other internal props, small one or two crew vehicles, components for scratchbuilders and converters, right up to a huge eight-wheeled all-terrain explorer vehicle. Some of the bits are made by us and cast in resin and metal, and we’ve also licenced a large range of items from David Sheff which we’ll be 3D-printing in resin. It’s mainly aimed at smaller scale skirmish games, although hopefully gamers playing larger games will also find some useful bits as well.

We’re starting gently, with some cargo items and a set of security barriers. Basically, stuff for your characters to hide behind in a firefight…

Security Barriers

SF28-801 – Barrels (x8) – £3.00
SF28-802 – Cargo Cases (x4) – £4.00
SF28-803 – Security Barriers (x3) – £6.00

Dropships and Dwellings

To round off the week we have our additions to Germy’s 3mm Sci-fi range. First up is a large dropship – this was originally made as a multi-part metal model when the range was previously available, but we’ve remade it to Germy’s original design as a one-piece resin casting.

We also have some new buildings. This set of hexagonal hab units is based on the paper models that Germy offers as free downloads on his website, but we’ve remade them as a set of six resin buildings which come complete with the connecting walkways.

We also have this twin tower block which complements the rest of the tower blocks in the existing range.

As an added bonus, we have two new walkers – a pack of six Freelancer light mechs, and a pack of three Mercenary tripod walkers

GMM-306 – Mercenary Tripod Walkers – £2.00
GMM-344 – Mercenary Heavy Dropship – £2.50
GMM-443 – Freelancer Light Mechs – £3.00

GMB-106 – Twin Tower – £3.50
GMB-107 – Hex Buildings – £4.00

PLEASE REMEMBER – we’re on holiday this week, so while the website remains open for orders, these won’t be dealt with until we return on Monday 12th.

The Customisable Colony

One of our more popular releases at Salute was the 15mm Agricultural Colony buildings range. We’ve already had the odd enquiry asking when they’ll be on the website, and today is the day.

The buildings are scaled up versions of our 6mm set, which have been selling very well since release. The designs are based on the idea of a series of colony buildings made from prefabricated parts, which can be arranged to suit whatever type of building the colony needs (the original 6mm release post goes into more detail on this).

What’s different about the 15mm versions is that we’ve stripped off all the external parts – doors, windows, aircon units, roof vents – and left the buildings as a bare shell. The external details can then be fitted in whatever positions you like to make the buildings incredibly flexible. You can also buy packs of extra detail pieces so you can customise them to your heart’s content. We’ve made multiple different types of doors and other parts to even further vary the look between buildings.

Here’s an example of the parts in a single building – for the homesteads you get the basic building shell plus a door, two windows, roof vent, aircon unit and extension. The parts are supplied randomly – there are three types of door and aircon, four types of roof vent and two different extensions. Even the windows are left and right handed. All of the parts are available separately so you can buy extra detail parts and really go to town.

The painting scheme we came up with is pretty simple to allow us to turn out good looking variants very quickly. In case anyone wants to try it, it goes as follows…

  • Spray prime in medium grey (we use Hycote grey car primer)
  • Zenithal overspray from above in a lighter grey (Citadel Grey Seer works well for this). Spray this very lightly, just a dusting really.
  • Give the whole model a black wash – GW Nuln Oil, Army Painter Dark Tone or whatever your favourite is. Cover the whole model, not just the bits you think will stay grey, as the shading will enhance the next stage as well.
  • You can give the whole thing a quick light grey drybrush at this stage if needed.
  • Block in the ribbed parts of the building using one of the many types of speed paint available – we use Citadel Contrast paints, but Army Painter Speedpaints or Vallejo Xpress Color would work equally well. If you need a little more contrast, maybe a light drybrushing on the coloured parts.
  • Then just paint in the remaining details in whatever colours you choose – oily silver for airvents or aircon units, graduated blue windows etc.
