Imperial Skies

Amongst the games on show at Broadside last weekend was the debut of a new ruleset going by the name of Imperial Skies. They are being developed by our friend Robin Fitton, author of Gruntz, the popular 15mm set. Robin said that they seemed to go down well with players who joined in the game, and he’s making progress with a view to a release later this year.

I’ve nicked a few pictures from Robin of the game on Sunday (I’m sure he won’t mind) – you might recognise the scenery, as we lent him the terrain we made last year for the Stoke Rochford weekend.

ImperialSkies

Robin’s coming down to Maidstone next month for some playtesting, so we’ll probably have more pictures then – I’m planning to paint up some new ships and terrain in time for that.

Tommy Atkins

The latest 15mm figures to hit the website are this pack of British infantry. This is a 10-man squad split into two fireteams, each with an NCO, support weapon and three riflemen.

SF15-160

SF15-160 – British Infantry Squad – £3.75

MechInfantry

These figures were formerly part of the Armies Army Commonwealth range.

The reason for the slow pace with which we’re adding figures to the website is that we want painted versions of each pack to photograph, and the painting takes time … If there are any particular figures from the Armies Army ranges that you’d like that haven’t reached the website yet, please ask – we have all the moulds so we can produce them.

Broadside Update

We had a productive day at the workshop yesterday, stocking up on the last few bits and pieces for Broadside tomorrow. In particular, we were concentrating on producing plenty of the former Armies Army figures that we now own. As well as the models we’ve already added to the website (the Penal Troopers, Chinese PLA, Yenpalo aliens and South African infantry) we did some of the other packs. After our efforts, we will also have stock of some RUSK Guards (infantry, support weapons, HQ and Spetsnaz) and British special forces (SAS and marines in hardsuits (below)). These may not be on display on the stand, we don’t have painted versions of all of them yet, but we will have them with us so please ask.

What Have The Romans Ever Done For Us?

Well in this case … the theatre ? Gladiators ? Somewhere to live … ?

So far, most of the releases in our Small Scale Scenery range have been targeted at the latter part of the 19th century as support to our Aeronef and Land Ironclads ranges. We’ve had the odd venture into the 20th century with some WW2 products, and a couple of medieval castles, but that’s been it.

Today, we’re going back further into history with the release of our first ancient-era models. Starting with the basics, we have a collection of Roman buildings – houses, apartments (insulae), villas and other bits and pieces.

RomanRelease

To keep the residents of these houses entertained, we have two options – a semi-circular theatre, and a full-sized amphitheatre, which is the largest model in our 2mm range (so far). The theatre is a fairly generic model which would fit in any medium-sized Roman town. The amphitheatre is based on the one in Arles, France, which is still in use today as a concert venue.

SSS-8057 – Roman Buildings – £7.50
SSS-8058 – Roman Theatre – £2.50
SSS-8059 – Amphitheatre – £10.00

There are at least two more models to follow these – but we had a couple of mould glitches (and one damaged master), so these will follow at a later date.

China Crisis

Yet more 15mm figures today (we’re adding them to the website as fast as I can paint them !).

PLARelease

These are Chinese (CDSU) troopers in helmets with enhanced night vision goggles (ENVG). The rifle squad consists of two four-man fireteams with rifles. The PLA (People’s Liberation Army) doesn’t have squad-level support troopers – instead, each team has a remote support drone with a gatling automatic weapon for heavy firepower.

Separate support squads are equipped with heavy automatic weapons and missile launchers – our pack has three of the former and two of the latter.

More Chinese infantry packs are to follow with headquarters and heavy support weapons.

SF15-560 – PLA Rifle Squad (pack of 10) – £3.75
SF15-561 – PLA Support Weapons (pack of 5) – £2.00

These figures were formerly part of the Armies Army PLA range.

Sentry Weapons

We have something a bit different today. These are EuroFed remote weapons mounts, fixed autonomous systems that can be set up and left to rely on their AI to select and engage targets (although the AI isn’t always as discriminating between friend and foe as it should be …). Perfect for defending a perimeter, they’re often used by rapid reaction forces to create a defensive line when air-dropped or orbitally inserted. Four variations exists – a twin-MG, 5-barrel gatling, twin AT missile or 9-tube salvo missile.

AsterieRelease

They are known as Asterie (starfish) in the EuroFed forces because of their five-legged base, with the larger salvo missile version known as the Oursin de Feu (Fire Urchin) after the spined sea creature.

SF15-413 – Asterie Gun Mount – £1.25
SF15-413a – Asterie Gatling Mount – £1.25
SF15-413b – Asterie Missile Mount – £1.25
SF15-413c – Oursin Salvo Missile Launcher – £1.50

Local Venue

After the hype and excitement of a massive event like Salute, it’s quite nice to return to normality at a smaller show. Broadside is our local show, and about as local as it can get – I live a ten minute walk from the venue in Sittingbourne. It’s an excellent do, well run by the friendly hosts, Milton Hundred Wargames Club. It’s fast approaching, and will be held on Sunday 14th from 10-4pm.

broadside2015header

Because it’s so close to us, we haul as much as we can with us so we should be very well stocked. If you’d like to place an order for collection at the show we’re still open to requests for a few more days.

We will have some new bits with us, of which more next week. We’re still sorting through the Armies Army moulds and should have a fair number of packs with us. However if there are any specific models from the AA range that you would like us to bring then please get in touch and we will do our best to get the moulds running for you.

As an added bonus, our friend Robin Fitton is running a demo’ of his new Imperial Skies rules using our Aeronef models which you can join in with.

Veldt Warriors

SAC-1

Joining our South African 15mm army this week are these infantry in bush hats – perfect for operations on the plains of southern Africa. The 10-man squad consists of two five-man fireteams each consisting of a squad leader, three riflemen and a support weapon.

SAC-2

SF15-660 – Rifle Squad in Bush Hats – £3.75

Our Triumph in the Cosmos !

Our triumph in the cosmos–the anthem of the Soviet country! is the translated caption (thanks, Bing!) of this wonderful space-race era propaganda poster. I also thought it would make a great opener for the release of our Soviet spaceship fleet.

SPP800

This initial release consists of eight models – six ships and two fighter types – as well as two packs. The Fleet pack has two battleships plus escorts, while the carrier pack has a carrier, thirty fighters plus escorting ships.

SovietRelease

SFSP-1201 – Soviet Fleet Pack – £22.00
SFSP-1202 – Soviet Carrier Pack – £22.00
SFS-1200 – Voroshilov class Battleship – £7.50
SFS-1210 – Varyag class Carrier – £9.00
SFS-1220 – Groznyy class Heavy Cruiser – £3.00
SFS-1221 – Isakov class Light Cruiser – £2.00
SFS-1230 – Stoykiy class Destroyer – £1.25
SFS-1240 – Molniya class Frigate – £0.75
SFS-1260 – Sokol class Interceptor (x12) – £1.50
SFS-1261 – Grif class Fighter-Bomber (x12) – £1.50

CarrierRelease

The colour scheme is Tamiya Sky Blue with a heavy wash and drybrush using Citadel paints. The Soviet stars are from Dom’s Decals aircraft range, other decals from my bits box (I think the pennant numbers on the carrier and battleship are a chopped up 1/35th number plate from a Leopard I !).

Given the response they have received at Salute last month and on various forums, I think it’s unlikely that we won’t be releasing more ships in this fleet !
